Understanding Fibromyalgia

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is much more than simply having aches and pains. It is a recognised chronic pain condition that can affect pain, energy, sleep, concentration and sensitivity to everyday sensations.

A Simple Definition

Fibromyalgia affects much more than the muscles.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, cognitive difficulties and increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli. It is associated with changes in how the nervous system processes pain and other sensory signals.

Recognising Fibromyalgia

Common Symptoms

Widespread Pain
Pain may be experienced across different areas of the body and can vary in intensity and location.
Fatigue
Persistent tiredness and reduced energy can occur even after what appears to be adequate rest.
Sleep Disturbance
Sleep may be disrupted or unrefreshing, contributing to fatigue and difficulty functioning during the day.

The Science

Why Does Fibromyalgia Happen?

Altered Pain Processing
Research suggests that fibromyalgia involves changes in how the central nervous system processes and responds to pain and other sensory information.
More Than One Factor
Fibromyalgia is thought to involve multiple interacting factors. Genetics, illness, stress, sleep disruption and other biological and environmental influences may contribute.
The Pain Is Real
Fibromyalgia pain is real. Routine blood tests and imaging do not necessarily show the changes involved in how the nervous system processes pain.
Everyone Is Different
Fibromyalgia does not look exactly the same in everyone. Symptoms, triggers, severity and responses to different appro approaches can vary considerably.

Can Fibromyalgia Improve?

There is currently no single cure for fibromyalgia, and there is no one approach that works for everyone. However, many people can experience meaningful improvements in symptoms, daily functioning and quality of life through an individualised combination of appropriate medical care, education, physical activity, sleep support, stress management and other evidence-informed approaches.
